The Black Girl Burnout podcast is dedicated to helping black women learn how to opt-out of the mentality of struggle while also learning how to opt-into the life of joy, abundance, and good health, which is their birthright. Burnout can manifest in a variety of ways, including feelings of exhaustion, cynicism, and a lack of accomplishment. It is totally ok if you are experiencing more than one of the feelings at the same time. Being able to fully align with your truth is a significant sign of strength. The ultimate goal of the podcast is to help women achieve Opting Out of Struggle.
GUEST BIO : Dr. Jennifer M. Gómez
Jennifer M. Gómez, Ph.D., Board Member and Chair of the Research Advisory Committee at the Center for Institutional Courage, is an Assistant Professor at Boston University School of Social Work and Center for Innovation in Social Work & Health.
In addition to her expertise in structural racism and systems-level change, her primary research focus is cultural betrayal trauma theory (CBTT), which she created as a framework for understanding the mental, behavioral, cultural, and physical health impact of violence on Black and other marginalized youth, young adults, and elders within the context of inequality.
As a 2021-22 Fellow at the Stanford University Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), Dr. Gómez wrote her first book, The Cultural Betrayal of Black Women & Girls: A Black Feminist Approach to Healing from Sexual Abuse (APA; Book Release Date: 11 July 2023: https://jmgomez.org/the-book/). Her work has been recognized by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), Ford Foundation, and Michigan Center for Urban African American Aging Research (MCUAAAR).
She has also provided research perspectives on violence, sexual abuse and harassment, racism, and sexism in national news outlets, including in The Lily—a product of Washington Post, NBC News, HuffPost, Newsweek, and Forbes. Dr. Gómez’ ultimate goal for her work is to promote equity, equality, and healing for individuals, families, communities, institutions, and society.
